WITH ZERO CORPORATE MONEY

Meet Joaquín

My name is Joaquín Vázquez and I am a first-generation Mexican American, born and raised by working-class undocumented immigrant parents in San Diego. As a child, I overcame family separation and homelessness when my father was detained for several months, then permanently deported. My mother could no longer afford our apartment in City Heights. We lived between our van, hotels, and the garages of friends and family before moving to Mexico to join my father.

With my parents still living in Mexico, I worked my way through college, eventually earning a Bachelor's in Political Science and International Relations focused on Economics from U.C. Davis, and a Master's in Public Policy and Administration from Northwestern University.

My history in the community as an organizer is vast, serving individually and in various progressive advocacy organizations. I've fought to bring justice for working class and marginalized families in poverty at all levels of government; from fighting against displacement locally to achieving equitable public education funding in Sacramento. Under President Obama's administration, I worked on federal economic, environmental, and labor policy. On the international stage, I've fought for refugee justice and for the most vulnerable countries to get a seat at the table at the United Nations in Switzerland. Now I am fighting for the people of California's 53rd Congressional District to have a voice in Washington, DC and fight the Trump agenda.

Why He's Running

As an experienced policy advisor, community organizer, and unapologetic progressive, I am running for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent the people of California’s 53rd Congressional District and kick special interests to the curb. Establishment politicians and the rich have free reign over our communities. The most pressing problems destroying our communities are ignored. Families are struggling to make ends meet. In a time where we need all hands on deck, politicians have gotten comfortable in their seats, taking billions of dollars from corporations, catering to special interests, and leaving the middle- and working-class people to drown as they swim against the waves.

We don't need more rich politicians buying seats, nor establishment politicians making their corporate donors richer, while they do as they are told. Their time is up. We, the people, are taking Washington back!

My educational and professional background make me the most qualified candidate for the job, but it is my life experience that makes me the true champion of the people.  As I stand for progressive values, I am fighting for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, ending homelessness, Housing and Education for All, a federal jobs guarantee, transportation justice, immigration reform and banning private prisons, while #PuttingPeopleFirst.  Join me and let's take this seat back for the people!
